Snow goggle VLT: compare the actual lens, not its colour alone

Read visible light transmission on the exact lens record, then compare frame compatibility, included lenses and care instructions separately.

Ask for the lens name as well as the frame name

When comparing snow goggles, record the full lens name and variant beside the frame model. A frame can be sold with different lenses, and a photograph can make a tint look different under another light or exposure. Smith Australia defines visible light transmission, or VLT, in terms of light passing through the lens. That is a documented optical field to look up, rather than a percentage to estimate from the apparent colour. The pink-framed goggles photographed here are an archived object with an amber-looking lens. Neither their appearance nor the colour of the frame supplies their VLT. Start a shortlist with exact identities so that a seller can answer a specific question.

Use a published range within its named scope

Smith Australia’s guide dated 5 August 2025 groups named Sun lenses with VLTs ranging from 9–16%. It discusses Everyday, Storm and photochromic options separately. Those are the maker’s lens-family descriptions, checked here on 28 October 2026, rather than a specification for every lens carrying a similar colour name. A fixed percentage and a changing photochromic range also need different fields on the comparison. Preserve both endpoints when the manufacturer publishes a range and check the exact current variant before purchase. A broad lens-family guide can explain the terms, but it does not measure the archived photographs, determine a reader’s visual needs or decide whether local conditions are suitable. For two actual named alternatives, Smith Japan lists CP SUN Black Gold Mirror at 13% VLT and CP Storm Rose Flash at 50% VLT. They belong to its Sun and Storm groups respectively: the second listed value transmits more visible light, a difference of 37 percentage points. That is a documented lens-field comparison, not a measurement of a photographed goggle or a visibility guarantee. The same manufacturer page warns that VLT can vary slightly with the goggle model. Preserve the exact regional source and ask which figure applies to the actual model, lens reference and generation supplied in Australia. Neither a matching colour name nor the table alone confirms replacement compatibility.

What VLT describes: Light transmitted through a lens; Smith AU named Sun-lens family: Published range 9–16%; Required before comparing a product: Exact lens and frame identity
The 9–16% range belongs to the named manufacturer Sun-lens family. It is not a measurement of the three archival goggle photographs.

Compare percentages without inventing a product result

For an explicitly fictional worksheet, suppose one lens record states 20% VLT and another states 50%. The difference is 30 percentage points. This example teaches how to keep percentages readable; it does not describe any photographed lens or establish that one product will deliver a particular improvement in vision. Do not turn that subtraction into a claim about contrast, fogging, glare comfort or safety. Record any other relevant manufacturer claims as separate fields, with their own scope and source. If the seller supplies only a colour description, leave the VLT blank until the applicable specification is confirmed. A blank field is more useful than a plausible-looking value copied from a different generation.

Fictional record A: 20% VLT; Fictional record B: 50% VLT; Arithmetic only: 50 − 20 = 30 percentage points
The arithmetic difference is 30 percentage points. This example predicts no visual performance, protection or suitability.

Check what fits the actual frame

The grey Nevica photograph shows a visibly different frame and lens shape. That difference is a practical reminder to check the named replacement fit rather than ordering a lens by tint alone. Ask the supplier which frame model and version the replacement is documented for, and whether a proposed goggle package includes one lens or additional lenses. Keep prescription-glasses and helmet-fitting questions distinct from the transmission figure. Smith’s replacement page links to applicable model instructions; follow the exact instructions or seek help rather than forcing an unfamiliar lens mechanism. This article does not establish interchangeability between brands. The historical photograph illustrates the identity problem and is not a current stock or replacement-part listing.

Save the specification with the care instructions

The black Nevica goggles with an orange-looking lens are a third separately photographed object. Their colour is another observation to keep apart from a measured specification. After choosing equipment through the applicable product and fitting information, save the lens identity, source, receipt and exact care instructions together. For its own products, Smith’s FAQ advises allowing wet inner lenses to air dry rather than wiping them. Keep that brand guidance within the applicable model instructions and ask about damage or uncertain coatings instead of adopting a generic scratch-removal remedy. The useful purchase file identifies the frame, each lens and what the supplier confirmed. Our AI conceptual cover is labelled; the three real product photographs do not depict the Smith lens-family examples.
